The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday, September 8, said that it now plans to set up a Cambridge-affiliated school, which is expected to start admissions from next year.

Mumbai guardian minister Aaditya Thackeray made this announcement and said the civic body will hold meetings with the board and look at starting at least one school by June next year.

Thackeray also said that BMC aims to have one school affiliated with the Cambridge Board in each of the 24 administrative wards in the city.

This comes after Aaditya Thackeray along with Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar chaired a meeting to examine the possibility of launching a Cambridge-affiliated Municipal School in Mumbai.

The initiative aims to provide international education available to students in Mumbai, regardless of their economic background.

The SOPs include staggering school hours, school days and lunchtime, creating more spacing among children in classrooms, re-designing school settings to prevent transmission of COVID-19, setting up a 'school health clinic' managed by a trained nurse-aide appointed by the school or a trained teacher or parent who is a doctor.

Along with the state board, ICSE and CBSE have partnered with the BMC for quality education in Mumbai. The tie-up with Cambridge International will ensure that the international curriculum reaches out to every child, says the BMC.

Aaditya Thackeray said, "Mumbai Public School has already started free CBSE and ICSE board courses. Now, international board courses will also be introduced."

He also mentioned that the corporation is also focusing on updating school buildings and infrastructure. Students are being provided with education as well as free literature. Due to the quality education in these schools, the lottery system had to be followed as more than 10,000 applications were received against a school with the capacity of 4,000 students in the current academic year.

Earlier, it was decided to change the name of the municipal schools to create a positive attitude in the minds of the people. Nearly, 963 primary schools and 224 secondary schools are being renamed as Mumbai Public Schools. A new logo has been created for the same, Thackeray added.

This is the first time an international-syllabus education is being taught in a civic-body run school. Traditionally, the BMC-run schools have been affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board.

On the other hand, in 2013, the concept of virtual classrooms was introduced in municipal schools.
