On Thursday, September 23, Kishori Pednekar, the mayor of Mumbai, stated that a decision to reopen schools in Mumbai, Maharashtra’s capital and its adjacent areas will be undertaken post the approaching Diwali festivities, mentioned reports.
A task force had earlier curated standard operating procedures for the re-opening of schools in the state. The experts had suggested that the teaching, as well as non-teaching personnel, be fully inoculated. Additionally, on Wednesday, the paediatric force gave the go-ahead for reopening schools in the state in a phased manner, stated accounts.
In March 2020, in-person classes in schools in the state were shut upon the advent of the coronavirus pandemic. On July 12, schools in the hinterland were permitted to commence in-person classes from Class 8 to 12, but only in those regions where the number of COVID-19 cases is low.
Based on the report by the Hindustan Times, Dr NK Arora, who spearheads the working group under the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI), made an alert last month that parents and other family members of school students must inoculate themselves against the novel coronavirus.
Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister had also requested the states as well as union territories to vaccinate all school teachers on priority before September 5.
With active cases, numbers diminishing to below 40,000 experts are of the opinion that the second wave is on a decline. Additionally, based on the results of the recent fifth sero-survey 86.64% of Mumbaikars have developed COVID-19 antibodies.
