In a major change to the academic policy, the Maharashtra state education department is planning to change the school timings of primary and pre-primary sections.

School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar made this announcement during his speech at Teachers Dialogue and Meritorious Students felicitation ceremony organized by the Progressive Education Society in Pune, on Friday, September 23. However, the final decision in this regards will be taken after talking to the educationists, experts, school management and teachers.

Justifying his proposal, Kesarkar said that primary school children are not getting enough sleep. Adequate sleep is essential for children's brain development and overall development. With schools starting from 7 am puts stress on them.

Most schools in cities run in two to three shifts. As a result, the first shift starts relatively early. Keeping this in mind, changes are being made in the morning schedule of pre-primary and primary schools, Kesarkar added.

He also assured that the problems faced by teachers, which he received through association, will be resolved at soonest.

On the other hand, an official from education department explained that before taking any decision they want to see the timings and models followed by other states and how it works. Many schools have multiple sections of the same grade. All these things need to be worked out before any decision is taken.
