The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is all set to launch its very first Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated school in the Kharegaon area of Kalwa on June 8.
In a landmark public-private partnership, the civic body has joined hands with Crystal House India to run the ‘Thane Municipal Corporation – Crystal House School’. Through this joint venture, the corporation claims that students will get access to high-quality education, modern facilities, and ample opportunities for holistic development, bridging the gap for students who otherwise could not afford a central board education.
To ensure everything is on track for the grand opening, TMC Commissioner Saurabh Rao chaired a comprehensive review meeting on Tuesday. The high-level meeting was attended by key officials including Additional Commissioner Prashant Rode, Deputy Commissioner of Education Dr. Mitali Sancheti, Suburban Engineers Vikas Dhole and Vinod Pawar, Shubhangi Keswani, along with senior representatives from Crystal House India.
Situated near Sapphire Hospital in Kharegaon, the school building is currently undergoing massive infrastructure upgrades funded by the municipal corporation. Commissioner Rao issued strict directives to all the concerned departments to ensure that all civic, safety, and structural works are fully completed before the June 8 deadline.
The school is being equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure to match top-tier private institutions. The facilities under development include a well-stocked library, advanced science and language laboratories, a dedicated computer room, and separate spaces designated for sports and fine arts.
Additionally, essential amenities like clean drinking water, upgraded restrooms, structural repairs, fresh painting, a dedicated playground, functional elevators, mandatory CCTV surveillance, and updated firefighting systems are being installed.
Officials during the meeting noted that the final phases of work, including window netting, playground preparation, and elevator servicing, are currently in their concluding stages, and the school is nearly ready to welcome its first batch of students.
The operational responsibilities of the institution will be managed by Crystal House India under a long-term 30-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed with the TMC on September 30, 2025. According to the agreement, the management is tasked with appointing highly trained teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as providing completely free education from pre-primary all the way up to the 12th standard.
Furthermore, Crystal House India will fully sponsor student uniforms, textbooks, educational materials, daily meals, and dedicated transport facilities to and from the school. Beyond regular schooling, the management will also place a strong emphasis on providing higher education counseling, career guidance, and employment-oriented vocational training to set students up for long-term success.
While the TMC has granted official administrative approval to eventually run classes up to the 12th standard, the school will follow a phased rollout strategy. For the upcoming academic session starting this June, admissions will open exclusively for classes ranging from Nursery to Class 2.
Commissioner Saurabh Rao emphasised that this ambitious initiative will successfully bring a national-level CBSE curriculum within the reach of local students in Thane. He highlighted that the project creates a vital and unprecedented opportunity for children belonging to economically weaker and underprivileged sections of society to access premium, quality education absolutely free of cost.
