Two Maharashtra teachers will be among the 47 from across the country to be felicitated by the Union Ministry of Education as part of the Teachers’ Day celebrations on September 5.

Though the annual facilitation of the country’s best teachers usually has a few people in attendance, including the President of India, the ceremony will be held online this year.

The winners for the awards were chosen by an independent jury from a pool of 153 teachers that were selected by committees from states and union territories of India.

The awardees from the state will include Sangeeta Sohni, a 58-year old teacher at the Atomic Energy Central School No. 4 in Anushaktinagar.

Sohini comes from a family of teachers and has been teaching for the past 35 years. Speaking to TOI, she said “I gave up my medicine seat to pursue teaching. In spite of teaching for nearly four decades, my passion hasn’t faded.”

She has been teaching chemistry to students from classes IX to XII while also creating numerous affordable teaching aids so as to maintain the curiosity of the students in a particular subject.

The second awardee from the state is 40-year old Narayan Mangalam who teaches at the Zilla Parishad Primary School in Gopalwadi, Ahmednagar.  “I was inspired by my uncle, who was a teacher. I started my journey in 2003 in a school in Paithan. Ever since, I have strived to make a change in the lives of my students,” he said.

Each year, Teachers Day is celebrated in India commemorating the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the first Vice-President of India and was also the second President of India between 1962–1967.
