Rating: 4/5

Films with stories related to a joint family has always been loved in Bollywood, and the lucky ones born in such a family relate to it the most, as every member in the household is different to the other, making it together, an amazing place to live. Different personalities in one big family share a unique bitter-sweet strong bond of love. Such is the Mandalia family.

This Gujarati feature presentation is an adaptation of Priyanka Chopra produced Marathi film from 2016, with the same name, which won a national award. Giriraj Prasad Mandalia (Giju Kaka) is unwell and on a ventilator. Concerned about his health, the entire family gathers at the hospital, but not everyone here visits solely for this reason. Giju Kaka’s son, Prashant (Pratik Gandhi), an aspiring politician has differences with his father. He develops a disliking for his father ideologies and thoughts, but this situation brings a difference. The latter part of the film largely revolves around various scenarios that are born, each teaching us something about life.

Just like the Marathi film, this version of Ventilator is a cinematic treat. With a cast of more than 30 characters, the film has been handled and produced brilliantly, where every actor makes a mark with their presence. Directed by Umang Vyas, Ventilator brings in an influx of emotions – there is one for every mood, and it all ends with a heartfelt tribute to a father – the hero of every family. His efforts deserve an appreciation as he successfully brings to you the true essence of a family. Niren Bhatt’s words add the soul to the film. The lyrics, songs, and the music support the film very well.

The casting director of the film deserves a special applause and appreciation, as the team has ensured that popular names such as Pratik Gandhi, Sanjay Goradia, Utkarsh Mazmudar, Sucheeta Trivedi, Mehul Buch, Tejal Vyas, and many other eminent performers have been brought together in one frame. The only slight disappointment in the film was Jackie Shroff and Juhi Chawla who try to fit the role, but do not impress. Jackie Shroff’s dubbing is all over the place and it seems as if he is murmuring the lines and not delivering it whole-heartedly. Juhi’s cameo could have been much better had the makers chosen anybody else but her. Both the experienced actors fail in the film.

To sum it up, Ventilator is a thorough family entertainer, which takes you on an emotional roller coaster ensuring that you feel and enjoy every moment of the film. The message of the film is strong and will melt hearts. This one is a tribute to every father. Much-loved!
