On Monday, February 14, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray visited Nandgaon fly ash dump (Maharashtra State Power Generation Ltd) in Nagpur.

These decisions were taken during the visit:

  • Directed Nandgaon ash pond to be restored to its original state within the next 15 days. Nandgaon & even the Waregaon ash bunds both will be permanently shut.
  • 100% fly ash utilisation as per Central Govt norms. Fly ash will also be used for infra projects.
  • Local livelihood is impacted due to fly ash. In the next 15 days we will prepare a plan for upliftment and employment opportunities for locals.
  • Comprehensive study to determine how ageing & polluting coal-fired power plants may be phased down in a systematic manner. An audit of all power plants in Maharashtra for pollution control measures will be done. TPPs not meeting prescribed standards will face decisive actions.

"We had received complaints regarding pollution through fly ash dumping in Nandgaon, I had also seen videos taking complete info about this. But I had to come to the field and see the actual situation," Thackeray was quoted as saying by ANI.

"Fly ash dumping stopped from February 4. Today after taking stock of the situation, we instructed that fly ash dumping pipeline be removed immediately and the place where ash is being dumped be cleared. Electricity is necessary but we'll take care that the environment isn't harmed," he added.

He further instructed officials to get rid of the fly ash dumping pipeline immediately clear the place where ash is being dumped.

Thackeray had earlier postponed his visit to the area slated for last Monday as the government has declared a public holiday to mourn the death of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Moreover, on Tuesday, February 8, Maharashtra cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray declared that fly ash dumping caused due to the State Power Generation Company at Nandgaon village has been curtailed from February 4 onwards, reports stated.
