The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday, July 19 issued an orange alert for the next four-five days in Mumbai and Konkan coast. Meanwhile, the department has forecasted a red alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the city.
A moderate to heavy thundershowers are expected with very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
According to IMD, heavy rainfall was observed due to the movement of an offshore trough from Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast on Monday, July 19.

Dr Jayanta Sarkar, Head of IMD, Mumbai told ANI, “An offshore trough is moving from Maharashtra coast to Karnataka coast at main sea level.”
“Extreme heavy rainfall is likely in the next 24 hours. We have issued a red alert in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) for day one and an orange alert for July 20-23,” he added.

Moreover, it was observed that a day after heavy showers lashed Mumbai, the rain intensity reduced briefly on Monday morning and picked up momentum again, leading to water-logging at some places, disrupting local train services.
Mumbai witnessed continuous rainfall since Sunday, and the city got flooded within a few hours. Besides, over 30 people died in rain-related incidents in the city. On the same day, the city received nearly 235mm of rain in just a few hours after a thunderstorm.
