The State Government’s Town Planning Department on Tuesday started online public hearings for the construction of the Metro Bhavan at the contentious Aarey colony. Earlier this year, the State had received 2,563 objections or suggestions to alter the land-use for 2.03 hectares of the land in Aarey colony.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had proposed a control centre and a central operation unit built across the plot in Aarey. The building would also consist of a basement and 27 floors, the plan suggests. The total cost of this project is said to be Rs 1,033 crores.
Following large scale protests from Mumbaikars in 2019, work at the Aarey colony was halted. After Uddhav Thackeray was sworn in as the Chief Minister in late 2019, one of his first directives was to halt the construction of the Metro 3 Car Shed at Aarey. However, the State Government has so far failed to recommend an alternative location for this massive infrastructure project.

Additionally, it was recently mentioned that underground tunnelling works for the Metro 3 line will only finish after February 2021. Officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) have said that the prolonged coronavirus lockdown, as well as the unavailability of labourers, led to the delay of this metro project.
It is worth mentioning that the State Government’s decision at the time to halt work at the Aarey Metro 3 car shed has also reportedly contributed to the delay in the completion of the aforementioned tunnelling works for Metro 3 underground line
