According to the latest updates, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Mumbai has enforced a "red alert" for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar for Friday, July 8. This indicates heavy rainfall in some places and extremely heavy rains at isolated places.
Earlier, the IMD in its forecast on Thursday, July 7 stated that Mumbai and Thane will be on an "orange alert" till July 10. The forecast for Thursday and Friday, July 8 predicts a "very likely" possibility of "heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rain at isolated places".
On the other hand, on Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10 respectively it anticipates a "likely" chance of "heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places".

Similarly, with heavy rains lashing Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai till Wednesday, July 6, evening, the season's aggregate rainfall went closer to the 1,000 mm mark.
According to reports, since June 1, the total rainfall registered in Mumbai was 43 per cent of the season's total required rainfall of 2,205 mm at 958 mm.
Based on accounts, the IMD Santacruz observatory registered 194 mm in the 24-hour period ending 8.30 am on Wednesday. Likewise, the IMD Colaba observatory recorded 84 mm of rainfall in the same duration.
Moreover, in the 12-hour period ending 8.30 pm, Santacruz and Colaba received 31.8 mm and 24.8 mm of rainfall, respectively.
IMD officials have attributed the current wet condition in Mumbai to a low-pressure area over Kutch and a neighbourhood with an associated cyclonic circulation.
