A recent tiger census conducted by the Wildlife Society of India has found that there are 3,800 striped tigers in India, up from around 3,700 last year. Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh have the highest number of spotted tigers, according to a report by the Wildlife Institute of India.

The campaign 'Project Tiger Count' has completed 50 years and in this background, new activities are being undertaken in the tiger reserve. Five striped tigers have been recorded in the Sahyadri belt adjoining western Maharashtra and Konkan. These include the Sahyadri islands of Chandoli Sanctuary, Bhairavgad, Ranjangad and Dajipur.

In the tiger census conducted three years ago, it was mentioned that there are 2950 tigers in the country. A tiger census was conducted in the forests of 22 states of the country. At present, the highest number of tigers, 600, is recorded in Karnataka, while 550 tigers are recorded in Madhya Pradesh. While in Maharashtra, 375 striped tigers have been recorded in Bor, NaveGaon, Melghat, Nagzira, Pench, Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, Tadoba along with Chandrapur.

Meanwhile, African cheetahs have been introduced to India. These cheetahs were released in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. However, some of these cheetahs were spotted coming out of the protected forest and approaching human settlements. Therefore, a new campaign will be implemented to protect the cheetahs brought from Namibia. An escaped cheetah will be released back into the free range in Kuno National Park.

Tiger census with new criteria

Since 2006, tiger counting has been done according to the new criteria. In this, tiger counting is being done in three ways i.e. camera tapping, waterside inspection and footprints. The wildlife agency has submitted a new tiger census report. The official report will be submitted on April 9. In this report, the number of striped tigers in India is believed to be 3,800.
