Dahi Handi festival is only three days away, and the excitement can be seen in Thane, Mumbai. Like every other year, this year too, participants are busy in prepping themselves to form the tallest human pyramid in comparison to their competitors. Across the state and in Mumbai, there are more than 1,500 Govinda Mandals.

However, while doing so, many participants get injured, while some die. Considering the gravity of the situation, the Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti, a government recognised umbrella body of Govinda Mandals in Mumbai, made it mandatory for every Govinda Mandals (groups) to buy an insurance cover of ₹10 lakhs for their participants.

But, so far, only 400 out of 950 Govinda Mandals issued an insurance, said Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti’s secretary Surendra Panchal.

The Bombay High Court (HC) ordered police not to give NOC to those Govinda Mandals who will not have an insurance cover.

The last date for buying an insurance cover is August 31, 2018. However, many Govinda Mandals have not bought the same, hence, we have written to Oriental Insurance company to keep their office open, on both Saturday and Sunday. Every Govinda Mandal should keep it in mind that buying an insurance cover is mandatory,” Surendra Panchal, Secretary, Dahi Handi Samanvay Samiti.
