As the COVID-19 pandemic refuses to abate, Shiv Sena is expected to hold its annual Dussehra rally virtually this year. This is an eagerly awaited event each year as the party personnel get to hear from the Sena president Uddhav Thackeray.

The anticipation was expectedly higher this year as this is the first time Thackeray would be speaking at the event as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Sources have suggested that Thackeray may speak from a stage during the virtual event at Shivaji Park scheduled to take place on the 25th of October. However, the setting up of a stage remains a concern given that it may lead to the gathering of large numbers of people.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, “There has been a discussion in the party on erecting an indoor stage from where he can deliver his speech and Shiv Sainiks can watch the event virtually. A final decision on this will be taken soon.”

It is said that Thackeray’s speech will likely focus on the government’s achievements since it came to power in late 2019. “He will be speaking as the party chief. So, apart from his government’s achievements, he may speak on the political issues, including how to take on the Opposition,” a Sena leader said.

There is precedent for a Sena-organized Dussehra rally being cancelled altogether as witnessed in 2006 owing to the heavy rainfall and in 2009 during the lead up to the assembly elections. However, it’s highly unlikely that this year’s event will be affected in any way as it is expected to be a virtual event.
