Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said that attempts were being made to malign the image of Bollywood and it was “extremely painful.” Slamming the opposition, Thackeray said that moves to end Bollywood will not be tolerated.

The Chief Minister was speaking during a meeting with the owners of multiplexes and cinemas via video conference. He said that Mumbai is not only the economic but also the cultural and entertainment capital.

“Bollywood films are talked about across the world. It provides employment opportunities for many. However, Bollywood has been discredited by certain people and it is painful. Attempts to finish off or shift the film industry will not be tolerated,” Thackeray said.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come in the backdrop of investigations by multiple central agencies in connection with the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The media coverage has witnessed Bollywood industry being targeted over drugs.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh also announced the formation of a film city in the state in order to lure filmmakers.

In the meeting, Thackeray said that the government was positive about reopening cinema halls which have been closed since March this year due to the coronavirus lockdown. The Chief Minister informed that the culture department has prepared a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) regarding the same.

The entertainment industry is one of the major sources for state’s economy and the government was eager to restart it, Thackeray said while adding that the decision to reopen cinemas and multiplexes will be taken soon.
