Maharashtra’s First Baby League, Somaiya Football Championship To Kick-Off on Sunday

Somaiya Football Championship to kick-off it’s second season tomorrow, would be held under AIFF’S Baby League Structure, becoming the first Baby League in Mumbai.

Somaiya Football Championship will see ten academies fight out in a double round robin format, with each of the ten team playing 18 matches, in the due course of the whole season, across three different age groups. Somaiya Football Championship is conducting the tournament under the new AIFF Baby Leagues format.

The Championship would consist of Under-8, Under-10, and Under-12 age groups, under a 5v5, 6v6, and 7v7 format, with all the ten participating academies having a team in each age category and the Academy with most points across all divisions will be crowned the Champions. 

The First season of the Somaiya Football Championship saw an amazing response from academies all across Mumbai. Prashant Singh, Director of Sports at Somaiya said about the second season and Baby League, The day I heard about the Baby League concept a few months ago from Richard, I was fully convinced that this is what was needed. We at Somaiya are proud to be one of the first ones in Maharashtra to implement this initiative adopted by the AIFF. To make the Championship more exciting, we are giving points to each and every player and run a Fantasy League with them.”

Richard Hood, Head of Player Development at AIFF, said, "It's encouraging to see Somaiya come forward and give a stable player pool 18 games in a concentrated and highly engaging timeline. We are very optimistic to see this project grow in its format and provide players with 30 weeks of competition and significantly higher number of games deliver a highly reputed platform for elite players emerging from the city in the years to come.”

The Championship will be held every Sunday from December 10, 2017, at Somaiya Ground, Somaiya Campus, Vidyavihar (East).
