To curb the flow of private vehicles in the city during the lockdown and prosecute repeat offenders, Mumbai Police has decided to cancel four-wheeler or two-wheeler licenses of such citizens. While the police will observe some leniency for first-time offenders, second offences will be taken very seriously.

Police officials said that they have arrested 1,167 people between March 20 and 31, out of which 991 have been released on bail. Further, the police have reportedly booked 615 people under different categories.

Police checkpoints across the city have been asked to keep a note of all motorists and cross-check them the next day for repeat violators. Mumbai is currently under lockdown with the police stationed across various points of the city.

The authorities sealed 45 more areas yesterday, which is an essential step to stop the spread of coronavirus. Some issues with regard to testing conducted by private laboratories have also surfaced today. It is said that a woman and her infant child were tested positive for the virus by a private laboratory. However, a second test conducted at Kasturba Hospital revealed that they were negative for the virus.

This came as the Maharashtra State Government asked some private labs to stop conducting tests after some complained of having inadequate COVID-19 testing kits. Several parts of Mumbai have identified COVID-19 positive cases, including a 68-year old domestic help who resides in a slum. The authorities later tested the maid’s entire family as a precautionary measure.
