Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Maharashtra have declined significantly across several districts, and the state government has been successful in vaccinating over two crore citizens in the state. As of now, Maharashtra tops the list of states in India in the vaccination drive, however, the unavailability of vaccines has slowed the process for now.

Addressing the same on May 23, 2021, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray stated that citizens between the age of 18 and 45 will not be vaccinated for the few days, since the drive has been temporarily suspended, owing to limited supply, however, the state government plans to ramp up the process and make this a round the clock vaccination campaign once the supply is available. This is likely to begin in June, he added.

The statement was made during his interacting with paediatricians in Maharashtra, and ANI quoted CM his statement which read, “Covid-19 inoculation drive for people under 18-44 years age group is suspended as supply of vaccines isn't smooth. I am hopeful that from June production capacity of vaccines will increase following which we can run 24-hour vaccination drives in the state.”

PTI further reported that the government is also planning to make full payment for 12 crore doses of the vaccines, which will be required for the citizens between 18 and 45. This will be sufficient to administer both the doses for six crore citizens in the age group. Besides this, the administration is taking every measure to curb the COVID-19 infection, and arrangements have already begun to tackle the predicted third wave. Sharing more information, CM said that the state has become self-sufficient in terms of the healthcare facilities as both the production and availability of medical oxygen is being monitored regularly.

Following the directives and warning given by healthcare experts, the civic bodies have also started planning paediatric wards and COVID facilities to control the cases during the next wave, which is expected to affect children until 18 years of age. CM has repeatedly mentioned that saving children from the viral infection will be a key priority for the Maharashtra government

He emphasised that the first COVID-19 wave affected the senior citizens and the the second one targeted youth. The predicted third wave could be harmful for children and every one in the state has to to be alert to protect them from the infection. Though the efforts have not been enough to defeat the virus, a collective effort is needed to control the spread, he added.

As of now, vaccines are being administered to citizens above the age of 45. Moreover, to ensure a hassle-free experience, several drive-in vaccination centres have been opened at different malls in Mumbai and nearby districts. As per reports, the concept has been appreciated by the citizens as it has offered relief to the disabled and senior citizens in the city.
