The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Vaccine on Wheels and American India Foundation have joined hands to facilitate four mobile vaccination centers in the city. The initiative was flagged off recently by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Suresh Kakani, and officials believe that the decision would help several citizens in Mumbai who are facing trouble with reaching a vaccination centre.

Apart from government and BMC-run centers, organisations have arranged for mobile vaccination centers which have been helping senior citizens in Mumbai. So far, initiatives like drive-in vaccination, home-based vaccination of bedridden citizens, drive of pregnant women, etc. have been arranged by the BMC and private organisations.

To facilitate this program, Vaccine on Wheels and American India Foundation have partnered with BMC, where the  initiative will be helpful to those  who are unable to come to the vaccination centres in Mumbai due to some unavoidable reasons despite their interest. Officials said that the team will focus on reaching out to various citizens such as HIV patients, prostitutes, third parties, construction workers, migrant workers, street vendors and others who meet all the criteria of getting vaccinated free of cost.

The BMC has prepared a list according to the administrative department, for which help has been sought from Mumbai District AIDS Control Institute, National Association of Pedestrian Vendors and other concerned non-governmental organizations.

Each mobile centre will have one trained doctor, two nurses, two medical assistants and an ambulance driver. The team will be provided with laptop and WiFi as well which will help them take further action regarding the vaccination and will also be helpful in registering people on the CoWin website.

Demands will also be raised to increase the number of such mobile centers over the next few weeks. As of now, on the first day of the initiative, a total of 50 vendors and 25 prostitutes in Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai area will be vaccinated. Manpower required for the same will also be trained with a scope to improve the process further. This facility is expected to begin from August 12, 2021.

Officials plan to open vaccination centres for pedestrians  in Borivali, Malvani, Malad, Bhandup, Grant Road and Kamathipura. Support is being sought from the National Association of Pedestrian Vendors with the American India Foundation to make this initiative successful.
