As the country is battling with the coronavirus, the city of Mumbai has turned out to be the hotbed for COVID-19 in the country. In the midst of the pandemic, a 27-year-old coronavirus positive patient has given birth to an uninfected baby girl at Wockhardt hospital, Mira road.

The doctors and the health workers of the hospital ensured that special care was taken of the baby girl as she was delivered. Zero contact was maintained between the mother and the child. The successful delivery of the baby girl in times of crisis has not only brought happiness to the mother but the doctors, nurses and other hospital staff undertaking countless efforts.

The mother and the father are said to be working for an engineering firm and are residents of Mira road. The couple were all geared up to embrace parenthood all the while being in home-quarantine since May 26. They were said to be provided with food by their neighbours on the doorstep. According to the protocol, before the surgery, the mother undertook a swab test and turned positive for the coronavirus. Her husband was also asked to undergo the test, however, turned negative. On June 3, the patient was admitted to Wockhardt hospital for caesarean delivery.

Doctor Mangala Patil, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist conducted the surgery with Doctor Brijesh Dubey who assisted her. Consultant General Surgery Doctor Roopa Mepani, Anaesthetist, and Doctor Samir Shaikh Consultant Neonatology carried out this successful delivery. Patil in a statement to the media informed that the infection control protocols were followed while conducting the delivery. She also added that the surgical team took additional care to ensure that there was no contact between the mother and the child.

Furthermore, Doctor Patil stated that the baby was shifted to the ward right after delivery and was not allowed to be breastfed. She further informed that after 24 hours, the baby’s swab test was done which turned out to be negative. On the seventh day of admission, the mother’s test is to be done again after which if it turns out to be negative, both the baby and the mother will be discharged, the doctor concluded.
