Amid fears of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, a man who returned from South Africa in Thane district of Maharashtra, recently has tested positive for coronavirus, an official said on Sunday, November 28.

The man, who is the resident of Kalyan, had travelled from Cape Town to Dombivali on November 24. However, he didn't come in contact with anyone after returning to his home.

Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) Dr Pratibha Panpatil said that his samples will be sent for genome sequencing to confirm whether or not he is 'Omicron' positive.

The civic officials tested eight of his close contacts, including his aged parents, but their reports have returned negative.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that the 32-year-old Dombivli resident, who tested positive upon arrival in Delhi on November 24, had tested negative after an RT-PCR test conducted 72 hours prior to his journey from Cape Town to Mumbai.

"He had undergone an RT-CPR test in Cape Town before travelling to Mumbai via Delhi but the report was negative for SARS-CoV-2. Upon landing in Delhi airport, when another RT-PCR test was conducted, he was found positive. There is a possibility that his previous report was false negative,” said Pratibha Panpatil, Chief Medical Officer of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC).

The patient is currently admitted at the Art Gallery isolation centre of the KDMC, the official said. Besides, the municipal corporation officer said that the health department is on alert and is prepared to deal with the new variant.
