Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday, April 25, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan for quick approval to state government’s request to set up a Jumbo COVID Centre near Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in Mumbai.

He also mentioned that BPCL has agreed to provide an uninterrupted supply of oxygen through their plant. According to reports, BPCL Mumbai Refinery is gearing itself to supply 40 tonnes of oxygen per day, through a pipeline, to the jumbo COVID centre being set up by the Maharashtra government.

This development comes at a time when the city and state is facing an acute shortage of beds and oxygen in the hospital. Furthermore, Fadnavis stated that thousands of oxygenated beds will be made available here to treat COVID-19 patients.

“Arun Singh, Director Marketing BPCL also informed me during a telephonic conversation that they are ready to fill oxygen cylinders for GoM if they make available compressor facilities for the same," added the state’s opposition leader.

Mumbai and its adjoining municipal corporation areas faced a severe shortage of ventilators on Sunday, April 25, with many government jumbo centres having a long waitlist to admit patients in need of ventilator support.

Earlier, the Mumbai civic body announced that it will set up 16 oxygen generating plants in 12 city hospitals amid a phenomenal rise in demand for liquid medical oxygen and a dire shortage of the same across the country.
