On Wednesday, January 12, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that it will be writing to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking them to tell all chemists in Mumbai to compile and share the data of those purchasing COVID-19 home tests kits, reports stated.

According to reports, the BMC intends to contact individuals to understand their results after they receive information from the chemists. The said decision comes in the backdrop of concerns that a large number of cases are going unreported since many aren't revealing their test results after using the home testing kits.

Based on accounts, BMC officials have claimed that nearly 300,000 to 350,000 home test kits for coronavirus were supplied to the city in the first 10 days of the month. But, results of only nearly 98,000 who undertook the home tests have been told to the civic authority.

Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner was quoted by accounts elaborating on how they look to curate a mechanism wherein those undertaking home testing for COVID-19 are reported to the authorities. He added that on Thursday, January 13, they will write to the FDA asking them to see to it that chemist owner in Mumbai furnishes details of those buying home testing kits.

After procuring this data, BMC's 24 ward war rooms will contact those whose results are not known, Kakani said. BMC officials have elucidated on how after buying the kits, people are asked to report their results by utilizing the mobile app of the manufacturer. The manufacturer in turn reports it to the authorities, thus, those who do not update the app will be contacted.

Based on narratives, it is anticipated that by the end of the week, the BMC is likely to issue a comprehensive circular covering home test kit sales, even on e-commerce websites, remarked officials, reports stated.
