In the aftermath of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proclaiming that it will set up the first early intervention and rehabilitation centre for children with special needs, the authority has curated a task force to fast track the project to see to it that it is ready in May, reports stated.

According to accounts, the centre in Byculla will offer medical facilities and therapies to those children with either physical or medical disabilities.

Additional Municipal Commissioner, Suresh Kakani was quoted in narratives elaborating on how they have put up the task force for monitoring and early commencement of the facility. Kakani further elucidated that the task force had its first meeting last week including an administrative and clinical team.

The additional municipal commissioner further mentioned that the task force is being led by BYL Nair Hospital. Thus, all decisions regarding the centre will be taken by them.

In the BMC budget 2022-23, the civic authority had allocated INR 5 crore for setting up an early intervention and rehabilitation centre for disabled children. It has been reported that the centre will come up in the 36,000 sqft area at the civic body’s Nagpada-Byculla dispensary.

As a first-of-its-kind set-up in Mumbai for children with varied disabilities, it will include facilities such as ENT, paediatrics, psychiatry, orthopaedics, and speech therapy.
