Mumbai has seen a sudden spike in the coronavirus cases since the first week of this April. As per reports, between April 1-7, the city reported nearly 1,300 infections across 24 wards.

Out of which, Andheri, Bandra and Grant Road reported the highest caseload in the last seven days. In the past seven days, 1,298 cases were recorded. And 39 per cent of the total cases were accounted by wards.

K-West (Andheri West) reported the highest number of cases at 208, followed by H-West (Bandra) with 122 cases, K-East (Andheri East) with 100, and D Ward (Grant Road) reporting 91 cases.

On January 31, of the 24 wards in the city, only six wards reported COVID-19 cases. At the time, the city had less than 20 cases. However, since the last one week, the city has been reporting 200 new cases daily.

Meanwhile, on Monday, April 10, Mumbai’s daily caseload was at 95 with one fatality. With this, the overall tally took over to 11,58,983, while the active COVID-19 cases in the city stood at 1,454, as per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) health bulletin. It also stated that 28 patients were hospitalised (30%).

However, a day earlier, on Sunday, April 9, the BMC's data marked 221 daily cases with only 17 people being hospitalised (8%). This data shows that while the fresh caseload has been dropped, the rate of hospitalisation has increased by nearly 22 per cent in a day.

Therefore, the BMC chief Iqbal Singh Chahal has hinted at issuing some guidelines, although not mandatory, as a precautionary measure. This development comes as the number of patients exposed to Covid infection is expected to increase in the coming month of May.

Owing to this, all the hospitals of BMC, as well as all the private hospitals, should also be equipped for the treatment of the virus, appealed Chahal.

In addition, he has advised particularly senior citizens above 60 years of age to wear masks as a precautionary measure while walking in crowded places.

Also, on Monday, April 10, the BMC made it mandatory for all the employees, patients, and visitors to wear masks in all civic-run hospitals.
