Mumbai: BMC Will Not Shut Down COVID Care Centres In the Foreseeable Future

Following Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s meeting with senior government officials, COVID warriors as well as commissioners from civic corporations, the Maharashtra Government has decided not to shut down COVID Care Centre (CCC) or dedicated hospitals. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to provide temporary relaxations to frontline workers who have been stretched thin during the pandemic.

Additional Municipal Commissioner of the BMC, Suresh Kakani said, “We need to be very alert for another possible wave. Not a single Covid centre will be closed down. We will manage the patients. The deans will decide on the issues of staff deployment and relaxations to be given. 

“Fifteen days after Diwali are important, and cases can rise. The month of December is also important as reverse migration will happen. People will return home after Diwali, and these cases can show up by first week of December,” he added.

As the civic body prepares for any likelihood post-Diwali, a report suggests that it has already started ordering life-saving drugs such as Remdesivir to maintain stock. Furthermore, suppliers of oxygen tanks have been asked to offer adequate supplies in November and December.

Mumbai’s COVID-19 recovery rate currently stands at 90% while the doubling rate is at 241 days as per civic data. The city registered a total of 998 new cases on Sunday while 865 patients were cured and sent home. A total of 23 COVID-19 deaths were reported on the day.
