A teachers’ organisation in Maharashtra, Rajya Shikshak Parishad, on Wednesday wrote to the BMC complaining about the poor cleanliness and sanitization at the civic schools used as Covid care centres.

According to the guidelines issued by Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government on October 14, only 50 per cent of teaching and non-teaching staff can be called to schools at a time. However, teachers stated that conditions of school premises were not safe for them to work.

Several teachers alleged that the civic body had not provided sanitisers and other cleaning material. In many cases, no cleaning was done such as washrooms which were unclean to an extent that I could not be used.

Shivnath Darade, member of Rajya Shikshak Parishad, who visited three civic schools on Wednesday, found that one of them in Tilak Nagar had even called in a few students.

He also shared two photographs and a video that he recorded, showing around six children seated with social distancing on bedsheets spread out on the ground. In his letter to the BMC, he has requested to not call students to schools. However, BMC education officer Mahesh Palkar claimed that they were not called for regular classes and were possibly told to come for some offline work, such as collecting worksheets and other material.

Around 270 BMC schools were used as quarantine centres were handed back to the civic body in August.
