SHARES

Expensive cancer treatments are out of reach for many patients. Some doctors have been accused of recommending more expensive treatments to patients for personal gain. So Tata Hospital has taken a step forward to create awareness among patients about cancer treatment. By providing information about the nature of treatment, its advantages and disadvantages, patients will be allowed to decide on the direction of treatment.

In general, citizens believe that expensive drugs or treatments are better. But often a cheap medicine gives good results. However, doctors do not give proper guidance to patients in this regard. With this in mind, Tata Hospital, BALCO Medical Center in Raipur and the National Cancer Grid have jointly taken an initiative to help patients decide which treatments are cost-effective and more effective. The initiative has been taken up under the theme 'Common Knowledge in Oncology'.

Cancer is being researched at various levels. In this, patients are treated without considering the far-reaching implications of newly conducted research. Many researches have different future implications. Therefore, it is necessary to inform the patients about the treatment given to them and take care of them. For this, emphasis will be placed on training doctors, conducting research, deciding policies, publishing positive news in the media, informed Dr. Manju Sengar, Tata Memorial Center Professor and Head of Medical Oncology.

Through this initiative, cancer patients will be empowered by allowing them to choose the treatment method. Priority will be given to making patients aware of cancer through minimal anxiety, low cost and avoiding unnecessary fear. Dr Bhavna Sirohi, Balco Medical Center, Raipur, Medical Director and founder member of General Knowledge in Oncology said that treatment will be aimed at primary selection of treatment, early treatment and modest cost.
