Amid the monsoon season, the citizens coping with the coronavirus outbreak for the last five months are now troubled due to other diseases as well. This has caused major concerns among people as the monsoon-related diseases amid the coronavirus outbreak also increase.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had directed private hospitals along with small nursing homes to admit patients suffering from COVID-19 to share the load. However, in the view of rising monsoon-related diseases, these spaces will be converted to manage non-COVID patients.

As per the BMC order, nearly 70 small nursing homes will be allowed to provide treatment for non-COVID ailments. The possibility of an increase in the cases of malaria, dengue, leptospirosis and other infectious diseases during the monsoon season can’t be ruled out. The number of malaria patients was higher in July and August this year as compared to last year.

The BMC had initiated a control room and assigned beds to COVID-19 patients in small nursing homes and small hospitals. However, patients suffering from non-COVID ailments require more beds. Therefore, the civic body has set these spaces free from their COVID duty. It said that the newly infected COVID-19 cases will be able to access large hospitals along with jumbo facilities.

Now, medical care will be provided in OPDs which are available in several BMC-run hospitals including King Edward Memorial Hospital in suburban and city areas. As the number of coronavirus patients is becoming manageable, the BMC is transforming hospitals into non-COVID.

Earlier, the civic body converted Nair Hospital into a non-COVID hospital and allowed some departments to reopen in phases.
