Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Devendra Fadnavis on Monday expressed displeasure over the remarks made by Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut about doctors. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Fadnavis said that Raut’s remarks have hurt the medical professionals.

Raut’s remarks during his interview with a Marathi news channel have stirred yet another controversy in Maharashtra. He said that compounders are more knowledgeable than doctors. Raut also blamed the World Health Organisation (WHO) for spreading the coronavirus.

“WHO is a group of people. Doctors are also part of their team. Actually, a compounder knows more than the doctor. What does the doctor know? They know nothing. I always take my medicine from a compounder,” Raut said.

Targeting the WHO, Raut said that people shouldn’t rely on the international health organisation as the COVID-19 outbreak is because of them.

Reacting to this, Fadnavis said that giving such a statement amid the coronavirus outbreak was not proper as the doctors are really working hard. The BJP leader further said that the statement made by Raut has hurt the feelings of the medical fraternity.

“I don’t know with what intention he (Raut) made these remarks. However, I think that giving such statement is not proper amid the COVID-19 situation. Doctors are really working hard. They are putting their lives at risk. These remarks have hurt their feelings,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) and the Thane branch of Indian Medical Association (AMA) wrote a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray condemning the remarks made by Raut.

IMA Thane demanded Raut's resignation while MARD sought to know whether the Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief also shares the same opinion as Raut about "compounders being more knowledgeable than doctors".
