With the Maharashtra government announcing stricter curbs to contain the spread of the coronavirus, small traders, businessmen, as well as daily wage workers are all anxious with regards to their livelihood.

The traders, citing economic losses, had earlier stated that the coronavirus induced lockdown across the state needs to be withdrawn. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, responding to the demand of the traders stated that no one wants to be restricted or in a lockdown, however, due to the nature of the second wave of the coronavirus, stringent steps need to be taken.

However, the lockdown has been imposed as a result of several irresponsible behaviours perpetrated by the citizens. For starters, wearing a face mask that properly covers the face along with the nose happens to be a must. However, many people stopped wearing one once they noticed that the COVID-19 cases were declining.

Meanwhile, even though social distancing happens to be binding, as the lockdown eased, markets and malls along with religious places began to witness huge crowds. Moreover, washing of hands and feet was recommended by health experts since the outbreak began, however, many got lackadaisical and failed to abide by the norms.

Therefore, it becomes pertinent to understand that adherence to protocols with regards to the pandemic could have helped avoid the lockdown. Moreover, if people learn from their mistakes and start abiding by the rules, the lockdown can be lifted on time, if not sooner.

On the other hand, on Thursday, April 8, Maharashtra reported 56,286 fresh cases of the coronavirus along with 376 deaths, taking the COVID-19 tally in the state to 3,229,547 and toll to 57,028. Moreover, the active cases in the state have now touched 521,317. The cumulative case fatality rate in the state is now 1.76 per cent. On Wednesday, a total of 236,815 tests were held, with a positivity rate of 23 per cent for the day.
