COVID-19 positive cases jumps to 37 in Maharashtra, 8 from Mumbai

Among the new four cases, three are from Mumbai whereas an individual from Navi Mumbai was tested positive for COVID-19.

On Monday, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope notified that the total number of people infected with the novel coronavirus has reached 37. The surge in the number of positive cases comes a day after the total tally for the state had been recorded at 32.

However, as per the Indian Health Ministry, the total number of cases in the country has reached 110. These figures were last updated on March 17, 12:00 PM and indicate the number of positive cases in Maharashtra as 32.

Among the new four cases, three are from Mumbai whereas an individual from Navi Mumbai was tested positive for COVID-19.

On Saturday, a 71-year-old man with a recent travel history to Saudi Arabia was suspected to have coronavirus infection, died in Buldhana. However, state health minister Tope said his was a suspected case and they have collected his sample and the tests are pending.

Currently, there is a lockdown in place in Maharashtra. All the cinema halls, malls, schools, gyms etc have been asked to remain shut till March 31. Grocery shops can remain open. The state is also advising people to avoid social gatherings and crowded places. 

Meanwhile, the biggest concern at the moment for India remains to be the people who keep running away or become missing after testing positive or who are suspected to be positive for COVID-19. 

Meanwhile, the death toll globally has crossed 5,700 mark as per AFP. In India, there have been two deaths reported from this novel coronavirus. On the bright side, the first woman to have tested positive in Delhi has fully recovered and has been discharged. 

Earlier today, Navi Mumbai Police issued a list of people who returned from Dubai, which is one of the countries affected by the pandemic, and failed to report to the hospital for quarantine. The police are now on a lookout for these people. The people were part of a large group and allegedly did not follow the rule of quarantine.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government has imposed the Epidemic Act across the state for the time being. 

Update: On Tuesday the number has jumped to 41.
