Civic corporations in Mumbai are hoping for further easing of relaxations as coronavirus cases in the city are on the decline. The Maharashtra Government has classified districts and civic corporations under five categories based on their weekly positive rate or WPR as well as the occupancy of oxygen beds in hospitals.
These metrics will be taken into account when deciding on relaxations. The state will assess these parameters weekly, allowing local authorities to issue fresh orders depending on the situation.
The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is seeking an upgrade to Level 1 from Level 2 which will bring some additional relaxations. Officials said that the TMC is seeking the easing of norms since it is witnessing a steady fall in positivity rate over the last four days. It’s worth noting that no corporation in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) is on Level 1 as of now.
Commissioner of TMC, Dr Vipin Sharma said, “We are on the border of Level 1 and 2 and have appealed to residents and traders to cooperate with us and ensure our ranking improves by adopting Covid safety measures.”
While Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivili, and Vasai-Virar are under Level 3, Thane and Navi Mumbai are currently on Level 2. The positivity rate figures from Thane city reveals that the region has seen an average positivity rate of 3.5 per cent over the last five days beginning June 4, while the occupancy of oxygen beds is relatively low at just 15 per cent.

The BMC is hoping to be upgraded to Level 2 which has a WPR cut-off of 5 per cent. Mumbai is currently reporting a test positivity rate of under 3 per cent over the last three days, renewing hopes that it could be upgraded to Level 2 soon.
However, the Additional Municipal Commissioner of the BMC, Suresh Kakani said that the state will monitor the positivity trends for at least two weeks before coming to a decision on easing restrictions. “So while it is heartening that the daily positivity rate is below 3%, the trend needs to be sustained for a week or more,” Kakani added.
Meanwhile, in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) limits, the test positivity rate is around 2 per cent right now.
“We are better in the positivity rate, which indicates our eligibility for Level-1 category. But the oxygen bed occupancy is 26%. We will review the situation on Thursday. However, we will take necessary precautionary measures to avoid a possible third wave for which some restrictions are needed at this juncture,” NMMC Commissioner, Abhijit Bangar said.
