In the midst of the surge in cases of coronavirus across the state of Maharashtra, experts have opined that the number of cases can only be expected to drop after April 15.

According to reports, state-appointed medical professionals have asserted that at least eight weeks are needed from the time infections started rising in the state for the number of cases to come down. Moreover, on Sunday, March 21, the state reported more than 30,000 cases. On Monday, Maharashtra clocked 24,645 COVID-19 cases and 58 deaths.

At present, there are 2,15,241 active cases in the state. With 19,463 COVID-19 patients discharged in the day, the number of recovered patients soared to 22,34,330. Furthermore, the positivity rate, recovery rate and fatality rate for the coronavirus in Maharashtra stand at 13.56 per cent, 89.22 per cent and 2.13 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope, in view of the situation, stated that if the spike in cases of coronavirus continues, the state government would be forced to impose a coronavirus-induced lockdown in certain cities.

In a statement regarding the same, Tope stated, “The chief minister in his address to citizens has been saying that if the number of cases keeps increasing, we will have to impose a lockdown. I will be talking to the chief minister again tomorrow. If cases continue to increase, then we will have to impose stricter restrictions.” He also said most of the cases in the state are asymptomatic. “It is my appeal to citizens to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour if they want to avoid a lockdown.”
