Coronavirus cases in the state of Maharashtra have been increasing rapidly and the data released over the last few days, shows that several districts have recorded highest numbers of cases. COVID-19 patients in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Nashik have been rising significantly every day, and observing the same, Health Minister Rajesh Tope, on Monday, March 22, 2021, said that if the number of patients continues to increase, lockdown would be certain in the state.

He further added that the decision on lockdown will be taken soon after discussions are held with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Minister Tope spoke about the same while addressing the gathering in Pune and added that the possibility of lockdowns and stricter restrictions in some cities could not be ruled out considering the COVID-19 outbreak that has been going on for the past few days.

The matter is expected to be discussed in detailed with the Chief Minister on Tuesday, March 23, 2021 and the situation will be observed for a few days before the lockdown is announced. He confirmed that the same will not be done on an immediate basis. However, to create further awareness, he has appealed to the people to follow the rules if they want to avoid the lockdown.

Experts believe that COVID-19 patients would grow further in another two to four days and it is also predicted that the number would decrease after that. The state government is working towards capturing the data for the same and actions are being taken appropriately.

Adding more, he said that the data from other states could be skewed since elections and several important meetings related to the same are taking place. The number of patients there could be low for this reason. At the same time, Maharashtra is a bigger state than other states, where more than 12.5 crore and therefore, in comparison, there are some states ahead of Maharashtra in the number of active COVID-19 patients.
