From Wednesday, March 16, onwards, India has extended the COVID-19 vaccination drive to include those between 12-14 years of age. This free of cost vaccination for the said age group will reportedly commence in government coronavirus vaccination centres.

Apart from this, precautionary doses will now be administered to all those over the age of 60. The requisite of “co-morbidities” has been done away with.

Amid the enlargement of the inoculation drive, Dr Urvi Maheshwari, General Physician from Zynova Shalby Hospital, Ghatkopar said, “COVID-19 vaccine is helping patients to build immunity for the virus and 20 other viral infections. It is seen to reduce the severity of illness. Patients who get infected after taking vaccines are getting a mild infection with a severe reduction in mortality. So I would recommend people to take booster doses and give the vaccine to their children in the age group between 12-14 also”.

In India, COVID-19 vaccines administered to the children between 12-14 would be Corbevax, manufactured by Biological E. Hyderabad. To this, Dr Asmita Mahajan, Consultant Neonatologist and Pediatrician, SL Raheja Hospital, Mahim, remarked, “Corbevax is administered through an intramuscular route with two doses scheduled 28 days apart. The approval for Corbevax will help us expand the vaccination drive and reach out to vulnerable children. As colleges and schools start to resume their offline activities, this vaccine will be an essential step in boosting children’s immunity.”

Moreover, since the children are the future of the country, covering maximum individuals amongst this age group will be significant. Apart from this, those above the age of 60 who form the vulnerable part of the population will also be protected through the booster doses.

In light of this Dr Badshah Khan Consultant Paediatrician, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road mentioned, “Vaccination can reduce the rate of hospital admissions and keep the community safe. It will be imperative for everyone to get jabbed to curb the spread of the virus.”
