On Monday, March 14, Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya stated that COVID-19 vaccination for those between the age of 12-14 will commence from Wednesday, March 16. Apart from this, 'precaution dose' for all those above 60 years will also commence from Wednesday.

Mandaviya took to Twitter saying, "If the children are safe then the country is safe! I am happy to inform that from March 16, COVID vaccination of children in the age group of 12 to 13 and 13 to 14 is starting. Also, everyone aged 60+ will now be able to get precaution doses. I urge the families of children and people in the age group of 60+ that they must get the vaccine."

The government has undertaken the decision to expand its coronavirus vaccination program by including those between 12-13 and 13-14 years of age. From Wednesday onwards, all those over the age of 60 will be eligible for the precaution dose, thus, the condition of comorbidities has now been removed for the said age group.

The Union Health Secretary remarked that administration of the precautionary doses will be undertaken on the completion of nine months from the date of second dose. Moreover, the precaution dose should be done with the same vaccine with which primary vaccination was done, highlighted accounts.

For the 12-13 and 13-14 age groups, the COVID-19 vaccination to be administered would be Corbevax manufactured by Biological E. Limited based in Hyderabad.

Earlier in January India had extended its vaccination program to include those between the age of 15 -18 and commenced precautionary dose drive for healthcare as well as frontline workers and those over the age of 60 who have comorbidities.
