According to the latest reports, the Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation reportedly stated that one patient affected by the "XE" variant of coronavirus was found in Mumbai. The results of the 11th test in the COVID-19 virus genetic formula determination - 228 which is 99.13 per cent (230 samples) of patients were detected with Omicron.

One patient is affected by the Kapa variant of the novel virus. Based on accounts, from the 376 samples tested, one turned positive for the XE variant. XE is believed to be a sub-variant of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. 

While the variant was first detected in India in Mumbai on Wednesday, April 6, reports claim that it was first traced in the UK on January 19. Since then, over 600 cases of XE have reportedly been found. 

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has elaborated on how this new mutant seems to be nearly ten per cent more transmissible than the BA.2 sub-variant of Omicron. 

In other developments, it was on Tuesday, April 5 that Mumbai became the first megacity to fully vaccinate its adult population. All 92,36,000 of the eligible population, those above 18 years of age, for two doses have received both doses of vaccination, stated the BMC
