JJ Hospital To Get Mumbai's Second 'Nirbhaya Centre'

Reports state that JJ Hospital in Byculla receives over 2,000 cases of violence against women, including cases under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, every year.

The 'Nirbhaya Centre' was first set up in King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in September 2019 and was inaugurated by MP Smriti Irani in order to provide legal, medical and psychological aid to survivors of gender-based abuse. The centre will also have a forensic expert to help police in gathering evidence against the criminals of such crimes. 

Reports state that Byculla's JJ Hospital receives over 2,000 cases of violence against women, including cases under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, every year. Keeping the same in mind, the State Women and Child Welfare Department has approved the proposal for a Nirbhaya Centre at the hospital and the same will be launched in the month of March.

The centre will not only handle the cases of domestic violence and rape but will also handle cases like acid attack and other forms of abuse against women. The centres will further have psychiatrists, medicine specialists, gynaecologists along with forensic experts to examine the women and will also tie-up with Non-Government Organisation (NGO) for further assistance.   

After Nirbhaya's case in Delhi of 2012, The Union Woman and Child Welfare Department in 2014 instructed all the states to have at least one Nirbhaya Centre in each district.
