In India, diabetic patients are on the rise, nearly 13 crore citizens are in pre-diabetic condition. In this, 39 percent of adolescent girls in Maharashtra are at increased risk of diabetes. It is clear from a survey that the proportion of girls in rural areas is more.

Pre-diabetes is a serious health condition. During this stage, blood glucose levels are elevated but not high enough to diagnose type 2 diabetes. Accordingly, a survey was conducted to find out the level of diabetes among adolescent girls in the age group of 16 to 18 years in the state. 1520 girls participated in this. Of these participating teenage girls, 2 percent were found to have pre-hypertension and 12.7 percent had low HDL.

Similarly, in this study, 39 percent of adolescent girls were found to be pre-diabetic. Therefore, Dr. Suvarna Patil opined that the future generation of Maharashtra is at risk of diabetes. A two-day discussion on 'Journey from Pre-Diabetes to Diabetes' was organised by the Life Science Institute at the International Conference 'Vishwa Swastham' in Mumbai. At that time Dr. Patil presented the observations of the survey.

We can reduce the risk of diabetes permanently by making lifestyle changes and getting timely check-ups. Improving individual health can contribute to global efforts to curb the rising prevalence of diabetes, said Gopal Sharma, director of the Life Science Institute.
