Maharashtra Tops India With More Than 80 Lakh Vaccine Doses Administered

With coronavirus vaccinations going ahead at a decent pace, Maharashtra has emerged as the first state to administer over 80 lakh or 8 million doses of the vaccine to its residents. The state has provided 81,27,248 shots so far and is trailed by Gujarat (76,89,507), Rajasthan (72,99,305), Uttar Pradesh (71,98,372), and West Bengal (65,41,370). 

Data shows that states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Kerala account for around 60 per cent of the total vaccine doses administered so far.

Around 4,30,592 people received their vaccine shots in Maharashtra on April 5. Mumbai vaccinated 50,068 citizens with 47,826 of them being over 45 with comorbidities. Additionally, 699 frontline workers and 1543 healthcare workers also received their shots. 

Meanwhile, Pune vaccinated a total of 70,747 people on Monday including 69,381 citizens aged 45+ with comorbidities, 436 frontline workers and 930 healthcare workers.

It’s no surprise that Maharashtra happens to be the state with the most vaccinations given that it is also the epicentre of the pandemic with a majority of India’s COVID-19 cases reported from the state.

The State Government has reinstated restrictions while also announcing a weekend lockdown to reduce the spread of the virus. However, the Central Government had recommended in March that lockdowns aren’t feasible in reducing the caseload.
