Mumbai is witnessing a rise in monsoon-related illnesses such as Dengue, Malaria and Chikungunya, even though there has been a southwest monsoon withdrawal for the past two weeks, and the winter season is approaching.

The city has registered 143 cases of malaria, 57 dengue and four chikungunya cases between October 10 and October 17, as reported by the Times of India.

These many cases were registered in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) run healthcare centres alone. Chikungunya is spread by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito and has returned nearly after two years.

So far, in October, the city has registered 19 cases of chikungunya, while in September, there were seven cases reported. In BMC hospitals, 154 cases of dengue have been treated in October so far.

Meanwhile, it has come to light that due to the ongoing pandemic, the testing for malaria and dengue has dipped. While confirming the same, Dr Mangala Gomare, Executive Health Officer of BMC, said that because of the lockdown, many patients couldn't reach the hospital to get themselves tested.

A doctor from a private hospital said that the number of dengue patients has been high during the monsoon but has dropped in the past couple of weeks in private hospitals. However, the cases are expected to rise during winters.

The civic body has made adequate arrangements in health posts, dispensaries, and hospitals to treat these infectious diseases said a senior BMC doctor. Last month, it was reported that BMC is taking measures against dengue, malaria and other rainy seasons diseases, which have been on the rise since July.

In a meeting held on Wednesday, October 20, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked the civic to be careful and prevent the spread of diseases like malaria, dengue and chikungunya.
