The Maharashtra Government has decided to announce relaxations towards coronavirus restrictions in 25 districts of the state including Mumbai and Thane.

State Health Minister Rajesh Tope said that these districts have been moved to Level 2 under the state’s grading system for COVID-19 restrictions. Although officials are undecided on the date that these new relaxations will come into effect, there should be more clarity on this matter over the next few days.

Despite the relaxations in 25 districts, 11 districts across Maharashtra will stay in Level 3 due to the higher caseload and test positivity rate. These include Ahmednagar, Beed, Kolhapur, Palghar, Pune, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sangli, Satara, Sindhudurg, and Solapur.

However, the meeting between CM Uddhav Thackeray and the State COVID Task Force couldn't decide on permitting the general public to travel via local trains in Mumbai. The Health Minister said after the meeting that the matter will be decided by CM Thackeray following talks with railway authorities.

Speaking about the issues discussed during the meeting, Tope said, “A concern was raised whether we have a mechanism to check a large number of eligible commuters. The CM has told us that he would consult with railways before deciding it.”

Tope said that the new guidelines will be published in 2-3 days and could permit hotels and shops to stay open until 8 or 9 PM with 50 per cent capacity. While weekend restrictions could be removed on Saturdays, it is likely to be imposed on Sundays. There may not be further relaxations for gatherings and weddings.

Some of the districts staying under Level 3 restrictions have been impacted by severe rainfall, flooding, and landslides. Relief efforts are currently underway to assist the affected communities.
