Mumbai will witness sharp decline in COVID-19 cases in 15-20 days: Rajesh Tope

The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has risen to 17,974. However, the state health minister Rajesh Tope informed that the cases in Maharashtra are not hiking the way some projections said it would.  

While expressing confidence that things could be better, Rajesh Tope said that the Maharashtra government has been taking the projections made by different agencies seriously but none of them has come true so far.

According to media reports, the Maharashtra public health minister assured that the coronavirus pandemic will be contained in the next 15 to 20 days in Mumbai and the city will witness a sharp decline in COVID-19 cases. 

Maharashtra has been the worst-hit state due to the coronavirus outbreak in India and has recorded nearly 18,000 cases until now. Of these, Mumbai alone has reported 11,394 COVID-19 cases. The death toll in the state has increased to 694. 

In an analysis carried out by the Maharashtra health department, nearly 59 per cent (5,228) of patients out of 8,816 patients who are hospitalised currently are asymptomatic while 26 per cent have mild to moderate symptoms. 

The analysis further informed that the of the 8,816 patients, only 236 or 3 per cent patients are on the oxygen support while 424 or 5 per cent are serious. Only one per cent of patients are on the ventilator while the remaining 96 patients are in the ICU for other reasons. 

On Thursday, the Union government on Thursday sent a central team to Mumbai once again. The team was led by Lav Agrawal, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The Union health ministry officials including eight doctors visited Mumbai to assess the COVID-19 situation in the city as the number has cases have crossed 10,000-mark. 

Rajesh Tope informed that all ward officers were present at the meeting which was also attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Lav Agrawal has suggested that the containment zones should be demarcated properly and contact tracing, testing and treatment of the positive patients should be done in these areas to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the state health minister informed. 

“We plan to increase the institutional quarantine facility. Also, early detection of cases will bring down the mortality rate,” he said while adding that the doubling rate in Maharashtra was 10 days but the state government
