The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to field four candidates for the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections which are scheduled to be held on May 21.

The opposition party has 105 legislators and the support of 115 MLAs in the state legislative assembly. The party released the list of four candidates on Friday for the state legislative council poll. The list includes:

  • BJP Nagpur city chief Pravin Datke
  • Gopichand Padalkar
  • Ajit Gopchade
  • Ranjitsinh Mohite Patil, son of former Maharashtra Deputy CM Vijaysinh Mohite Patil

Earlier, Shiv Sena has already finalised the candidature of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and has re-nominated Neelam Gorhe, the deputy chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council. Congress and NCP are yet to declare their candidates.

The Election Commission announced the polls after an appeal made by the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari. The last date to file the nomination is May 11 and the date for withdrawal is May 14. The results will be out on the same day of the polling.

Uddhav Thackeray will the second member from his family to contest elections. Aaditya Thackeray, who won from Worli assembly constituency on Shiv Sena ticket, became the first ‘Thackeray’ to contest polls held between September-October 2019.

Uddhav Thackeray took oath as Maharashtra Chief Minister on November 28, 2019, and is not the member of either house - legislative assembly or council. The deadline for him to get elected to either house of the state legislature is May 27.

Meanwhile, the MVA is intending to contest the election on six seats while each alliance will field two-seat each. However, the BJP seems confident to win on four seats and needs the support of 116 MLAs for the same. A source in the Congress informed that efforts were being made to hold the poll unopposed.
