Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has announced financial help of ₹5 lakh each to the families of deceased migrant workers who were mowed down by a goods train on Friday near Karmad station in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.

While expressing sorrow over the deaths of the migrant workers, the Chief Minister said that those injured in the incident are being treated at the government’s expense. The state government was in talks with the centre to arrange more and more trains for the stranded migrant workers and labourers for their return, Uddhav Thackeray added.

On Friday morning, at least 16 migrant workers were run over by a goods train between Jalna and Aurangabad. Five others escaped with injuries and were being treated in Aurangabad civil hospital.

A railway official informed that the migrant workers had been walking along the rail tracks to go to their homes in Madhya Pradesh but slept there due to exhaustion after walking for nearly 36 kilometres. The workers worked at an iron factory in Jalna and were walking home amid the coronavirus lockdown.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also announced ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the families of deceased migrant workers. Chouhan informed that he has spoken to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and has demanded a probe into the accident.

The migrant workers who slept on the tracks were walking from Jalna to Bhuvasal which is a journey of nearly 140 kilometres. However, they had stopped to take rest and fell asleep. The railway said that the driver tried to stop the train after spotting the migrant workers. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Chouhan informed that he was also in touch with Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray to get updates regarding the treatment of the migrant workers who were left injured in the accident.
