Days after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued guidelines to monitor the sale and utilization of at-home COVID-19 testing kits, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar on Saturday, January 15, people purchasing self-testing kits will have to provide their Aadhaar cards to the chemists to maintain a record.

This development also comes as the health officials raised concerns over underreported infections owing to a surge in the demand for COVID-19 self-testing kits.

Addressing reporters, Pednekar said that if anyone tests positive for COVID-19, the information must be conveyed to the authorities and also updated online.

She further said that a total of 1,6,897 lakh people had done COVID test at home till Friday, January 14, of which 3,549 people have tested positive in-home testing.

In the circular, the BMC has reportedly stated that chemist and medical store owners will have to issue a bill to the buyer for home testing kits. With this, they have to maintain the data of customers to whom they sold the home testing kits. Then the chemist and medical store owner have to share the information daily by 6 pm via email to the FDA Commissioner and the BMC's Epidemiology Cell.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, January 16, Mumbai saw a huge drop in the number of fresh coronavirus cases with less than 8K cases (7,895).
