Maharashtra: Over 89,000 Lose Their Lives To COVID-19 In The Second Wave

The state has logged almost 1.4 lakh COVID-19 deaths since the commencement of the pandemic in 2020. Out of these, nearly 64% of the causalities were registered in the second wave which began in February 2021.

Whilst many believe that the second wave is receding, it has resulted in the loss of lives of more than 89,000 people in Maharashtra, claims a report by the Times of India. It goes on to elucidate that over one in five deaths came from the Pune circle that is said to be the worst affected. On the other hand, the heavily populated Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) that initially bore the brunt of the pandemic has witnessed lesser fatalities recently.

The state has logged almost 1.4 lakh COVID-19 deaths since the commencement of the pandemic in 2020. Out of these, nearly 64% of the causalities were registered in the second wave that began in February 2021. In May and June is when the fatalities reached the pinnacle of 26,531 and 26,601, respectively. Fatalities fell to almost 11,000 in July, 4,522 in August and just above 1,500 until 25 September. During the first wave, nearly 49,521 COVID-19 related deaths were registered.

The Pune circle region, encapsulates the Pune district, Pimpri Chinchwad, Satara and Solapur registered for the largest COVID-19 deaths of 22% during the second wave. This was trailed by the Mumbai circle that comprises the Mumbai Metropolitan Region at 17.8%. At third place was Nashik circle at 17% deaths which comprise the Ahmednagar district that persists to witness very high transmissions and almost 700 cases every day which is greater than Mumbai’s daily average. Experts went on to comment that the real number of deaths during the peak could be much higher since many weren’t able to attain a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis, attain medical facilities or may have succumbed at home itself, mentioned the account.

The report also managed to converse with a senior state official who elaborated that the enhancement of COVID-19 health amenities in the city assisted in curtailing deaths in the nearby corporations also in the second wave. The official added that at the beginning of the first wave Mumbai and MMR was the dominating region which contributed to 50%-60% of deaths and cases. He then stated the infection travelled to the hinterland which had limited healthcare amenities, thus adversely affecting it. The second wave, on the other hand, began in the Vidarbha area, then spread its hands in Nashik, Akola and Kolhapur.

August and September statistics depict that the MMR’s endowment in Maharashtra’s coronavirus deaths has fallen to less than 15%. Pune, Nashik and Kolhapur circle now report 41%, 20% and 19% deaths respectively.

National Health Mission, commissioner, N Ramaswami, based on the report mentioned that Pune is seeing a reducing trend, whilst the numbers are bigger than others since it has many migration and mingling activities that may surge the numbers.
