As the coronavirus cases in the state declines, the Maharashtra government on Wednesday, November 24, said it is likely to allow resumption of physical classes for class 1 to 4 students.

Health minister Rajesh Tope said the health department has no objection. However, a final decision may be taken at the State Cabinet meeting tomorrow, November 25.

This came days after the state’s COVID-19 Paediatric Task Force has recommended physical classes should be resumed with social distancing and other norms in place.

On Tuesday, November 16, the Maharashtra school education and health departments accorded the go-ahead for the commencement of in-person classes for grades 5-7 in urban areas and 1-4 in the hinterland throughout the state, post a meeting with the pediatric COVID-19 task force, highlighted reports.

In addition, Tope said that the state government has asked the Centre to allow COVID-19 vaccination for the 12-18 age group as physical classes for Std 8-12 were reopened from October 4.

Tope also said health workers and those involved in essential services should be allowed to get booster doses. He added Maharashtra has administered 110 million vaccine doses.

The minister also noted that Maharashtra’s 40 per cent of the eligible population is fully vaccinated.

The number of active cases has fallen below the 10,000 level in the state and prompted the government to ease most restrictions.
