In recent developments, Mumbai’s Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar witnessed a case of a man dying after a rat nibbled his eyelids.

On Wednesday, June 23, the patient died due to the same. Moreover, the patient, Shrinivas Nagesh Yallapa, 27, was admitted to the hospital on Sunday with a very low haemoglobin count. However, the exact cause of his death was not immediately clear.

According to reports, hospital superintendent Dr Vidya Thakur informed that the patient died at 9 pm on Wednesday and the body was sent for post mortem. Moreover, Pravin Darekar, the leader of Opposition in the legislative council along with Ghatkopar East MLA Parag Shah and Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Secretary Pravin Chheda went to Rajawadi Hospital and met the family members of the patient. They also met Dr Thakur and questioned the authorities about the poor maintenance of the hospital.

Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials were informed about the incident. Addressing the issue Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar had stated that the condition of the patient is not well and that the eyelids and the surrounding area have been gnawed. She has ordered necessary action to be taken. Reports also state that the garbage was dumped near the ICU which is located on the ground floor of the hospital. 

On the other hand, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had earlier stayed the decision to hand over 100 flats in MHADA buildings to the Parel-based Tata Memorial Hospital to accommodate patients and their relatives as well as caretakers.

On Wednesday, June 23, Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad confirmed the decision. This comes after Shiv Sena MLA from Sewri Ajay Chaudhary wrote to CM Uddhav Thackeray and said that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the residents of those two MHADA buildings feared for their health if cancer patients and their relatives moved in.
