According to the latest reports, senior citizens accounts for 84 per cent of Mumbai's COVID-19 fatalities in January so far. This is reported to be a much greater proportion of deaths in contrast to the second wave of coronavirus. Nonetheless, the third wave which was driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant has claimed fewer lives at 159 in contrast to the second wave peak, reports stated. 

Based on accounts, in accordance with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data, from the 159 deaths, 134 were amongst those over the age of 60. On the other hand, 13 per cent which is 20 were between 40 and 60, while 3 per cent which is 5 were under 40.

The statistics depict that up to 86 per cent had one or greater underlying health conditions. Apart from this, many were either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. When this data is juxtaposed to the second wave in April-May 2021, the proportion of senior citizens dying owing to COVID-19 had fallen to 65 per cent and 60 per cent respectively, reports cited.

Moreover, deaths among those between the age of 40-60 had surged to 30 per cent in April and 32.5 per cent in May. In age brackets under 40, deaths had also increased where the case fatality rate touched 5 per cent and 7 per cent in two months.

It is claimed that the third wave began around December 21 and peaked on January 7 with 20,971 cases. The curve was reported to be much steeper during the second wave wherein in March 391 deaths were reported which surged to 2,727 in April and 1,858 in May.
